Last summer, the Mississippi Museum of Art launched Art Remix, a new and exciting musical event for downtown Jackson. Staged one Friday evening a month in July and August at the Museum’s modern and elegant facility, each event showcased three musical acts that helped jump start the weekend. Guests enjoyed specialty cocktails and spectacular bands such as Soul Rebels Brass Band, Todd Snider, The Vamps, Louis "Gearshifter" Youngblood, and Patrick Harkins Band featuring Billy Winston.
Attendees not only had fun listening to great music, but also enjoyed participating in scavenger hunts throughout the Museum's galleries for a chance to win an iPhone from AT&T.
Art Remix 2009 was such a huge success (drawing more than 1,000 people) that two more presentations have been added for the upcoming season. You are invited to relax after your workday by dropping by the Museum for refreshing beverages and great live music. You'll make new friends and enjoy beautiful summer evenings outdoors at Art Remix! It's sure to be one of the coolest spots to be in Mississippi; you don’t want to miss it!

Mr. Nick
Mr. Nick is a dj who creates sonic jibber-jabber on the wheels of steel. He likes building things, mostly useless and impractical things, but nevertheless they are always somewhat interesting.
Nash Street
This quintet, from Starkville, MS, has found success over the past few years by promoting their fresh and unique style of music. Their genre is best being described as Grassroots Country because the band combines the instrumentation of bluegrass, with the arrangements of contemporary country music to produce their uniquely southern, but completely genuine sound. In so doing, Nash Street utilizes the inspiration of influences, such as Chris Thile, Nickel Creek, Ricky Skaggs, Allison Krauss and Union Station, and Little Big Town. The band consists of Daniel Hare on upright bass, sisters Hannah and Caroline Melby on fiddle and mandolin respectively, Ben Mathis on rhythm guitar, and Clay Lezon on lead guitar. The band recently released their latest independent album, "Between Hope and Heartache". This project contains original material which is riding on the forefront crest of the Grassroots Country wave. Over the years, Nash Street's uniqueness has matured as their ability to combine instrumental arrangements and vocal harmony has become more creative. On January 24, 2008, the band was awarded for their diligence when they won the 2008 Colgate Country Showdown. Nash Street took home $100,000 and the title "Best New Act in Country Music". With such young members, their ages ranging from 25-20, Nash Street's distinct sound, stage presence, and ability to connect with varying audiences insures that they will one day become an attractive addition to the national music scene.
Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk
What started as a side project in 2003 has become regarded as the future of New Orleans funk. With a direct lineage to The Meters and The Neville Brothers, combined with members who have shared the stage with Dave Matthews, Trey Anastasio, Etta James and Harry Connick Jr. (just to name a few), Dumpstaphunk is a recipe for creating a new standard for an entire genre. Dumpstaphunk’s groove is a unique monster. It's not the minimalist funk of the Meters though the band can lock in like that quartet. It's not the relentless funk of James Brown, but it has that rhythmic drive. It's not the psychedelic, over-the-top circus of Parliament-Funkadelic, but it often has that political slant. It's not the party funk of the Ohio Players, but it shares the high vocals that take the pressure off the bottom. Dumptaphunk is a whole other school of funk. If you're under 35, you think you've seen funk, but you haven't. You missed the original Meters, James Brown when he wasn't a parody, Parliament-Funkadelic when the acid was great, Sly and the Family Stone before he went M.I.A, and Booker T. and the M.G.s before the demise of Stax. Dumpstaphunk is as good as that, and they're in their prime now. So go hit the Dumpstaphunk show and witness the premiere funk act for the new millenium! Dumpstaphunk is: Ivan Neville - Vocals, Organ (Neville Brothers, Keith Richards & the X-Pensive Winos, Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt) Tony Hall - Bass, Guitar, Vocals (Dave Matthews & Friends, Trey Anastasio, Jewel, Emmylou Harris,) Nick Daniels - Bass, Vocals (Neville Brothers, Etta James, Bob Scaggs, Wild Magnolias) Ian Neville - Guitar (Neville Borthers, Funky Meters, Lettuce) Raymond Webber - Drums, Vocals (Dirty Dozen, Trey Anastasio, Harry Connick Jr). Eden Brent
Eden Brent’s piano playing and singing style ranges from a melancholic whisper to a full-blown juke joint holler. She’s simultaneously confident and confiding, ably blending an earthy meld of jazz, blues, soul, and pop as she huskily invites listeners into her lazy, lush world. Greenville, Mississippi is where Brent was able to develop her gutsy vocal-andpiano chops via family sing-a-longs and a 16-year apprenticeship with the late blues pioneer Boogaloo Ames, who ultimately dubbed his protégé “Little Boogaloo.”
Afrissippi
Guelel Kumba comes from the Futa Tooro region of West Africa, and is a member of the FULANI people, nomadic cow people who spent centuries in the North African desert when it was still green before settling on the Atlantic Coast where many were captured by their enemies and sold into slavery. Kumba was born into the West African social caste known as GRIOTS, who pass down a millenniums worth of oral tradition including songs, stories, and lineages. As a youngster Kumba learned the molo, the one string guitar, and at age 8, the six string. When he was 20, he heard John Lee Hooker. "The blues is close to my music. The lyrics are different, but the emotions are the same," he says. "I loved the melodies but I was too young to understand the anguish yet." The nucleus of AFRISSIPPI was born when Eric Deaton, apprentice of the late JUNIOR KIMBROUGH, invited Guelel to explore the hill country sound of North Mississippi. Eric carried Guelel to the home of bluesman R.L. BURNSIDE where they discovered the eerie similarities between some of Guelels Senegalese folk melodies and those of R.L. & JUNIOR, the patriarchs of the hill country boogie and cottonpatch trance blues. With R.L.s blessing, Guelel & Eric recruited his son and grandson, Garry & Cedric Burnside, as rhythm section. When they left to launch Burnside Exploration, Kumba hired Juniors son and drummer, Kinney Kimbrough of Chulahoma and bassist Justin Showah (Jimbo Mathus, Cary Hudson Trio, Taylor Grocery Band) of Oxford, Mississippi.
Jon Cleary: Piano, Bass, & Drums
In the hallowed ranks of New Orleans “piano professors,” Jon Cleary is on the tenure track. With his new trio: Piano, Bass, & Drums, Cleary utilizes an acoustic format as a vehicle for his varied compositions embodying the flavors of New Orleans Funk, Classic R&B, and tropical rhythms. The lineup features Lafayette-native Doug Belote (Larry Carlton, Jerry Douglas) on drums, multi-instrumentalist Matt Perrine (Bonerama, The Nightcrawlers, Stanton Moore), and New Orleans stalwart James Singleton (Astral Project, Professor Longhair, James Booker) who alternate gigs on upright bass, with JC on acoustic piano.Born in England and bred in New Orleans, Jon Cleary is a triple threat, combining soulful vocals, masterful piano skills, and a knack for composing infectious grooves with melodic hooks and sharp lyrics. Cleary has produced five recordings to date including his latest, a live recording from Sydney, Australia called Mo Hippa, which features a mix of the styles that inform the New Orleans’ sound -- from island rhythms, to soul-drenched funk jams. Jesse Robinson
Jesse Robinson has been playing blues and jazz for over four decades. He first picked up the guitar at six, and was soon backing his father at church. In the early ‘60s Jesse moved with his family to Jackson, and at 16 began attending blues legend Elmore James’ regular gigs at Percy Simpson’s club. When James took a break, he would often hand Jesse his guitar and tell people, “This little guy’s gonna be a good guitar player one day.” In 2002 a song Jesse co-wrote with jazz singer Cassandra Wilson appeared on her CD Belly of the Sun. In tandem with his 60th birthday in 2004, Jesse released his first CD, Blues Child, and later that year released a Christmas album. He continues to perform as a solo act as well as with Jesse Robinson and the 500 Pounds of Blues Band.
Will Kimbrough
Will Kimbrough is hungry. The youthful singer, songwriter, award-winning guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, performer and bandleader has a voracious appetite for every aspect of music. Born and raised in the deep south of the Alabama Gulf Coast, he ingested eclectic FM radio sounds and the music of nearby New Orleans. In his quest to develop his musical capacities to their fullest, Will Kimbrough has become a modern-day Renaissance Man. Kimbrough’s body of work reflects a lifetime of performing, writing and collaborating from more angles than Da Vinci’s protractor. True to his search for universal truths, his profound musical knowledge and expert creations reflect years of learning the intricacies of folk, blues, gospel, country, rock’n’roll, punk rock and jazz. With 10 artist albums to his credit, Will has released five solo recordings and five albums as a founding member of DADDY, the bis-quits, and Will and the Bushmen. Kimbrough turned ears and earned new fans along with praise from the media for his outspoken Americanitis (2005) album, which cast a critical eye on early 21st century America. In 2007, Will released EP – his solo studio recording that revealed a hint of what would develop on his next full-length release. All Music Guide wrote, “Wonderfully written and executed songs: sparse yet full of literacy, emotion and a primitive’s attitude to modern invention, though there is nothing remotely primitive about the sound or craft on this short set.” For more information check out willkimbrough.com

Sherman Lee Dillion
Sherman Lee Dillon was born in Meadville, Mississippi (pop 451) in 1951. Fifteen miles outside of "town" is where Sherman Lee spent his formative years. Cousin Geraldene had a piano, so whenever he'd walk to her house, she'd give him lessons. Uncle Erastus taught the old time shaped note singing schools and made sure his nephews carried on the tradition. At age 12, Sherman began playing the guitar, at 14 the harmonica, at 15 the banjo and steel guitar (not to mention playing trumpet and baritone in the school band and teaching his brother the tenor sax). Living in a dry county with only one "black-topped" road, his performing experience had mostly been for neighborhood gatherings with payment in homemade wine. One night a band from McComb (Bo Didley's home) drove up at the Dillon house. They asked him to be their guitar player and go to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to make a record with them. At the age of 16 Sherman left home and has been playing music for nearly 40 years.Deciding to be a regional performer has actually worked quite well. Rufus Thomas, King Floyd, William Bell, Mckinnley Mitchell, Sam Myers, J.T. Watkins (to mention a few) have called Sherman Lee to play with them when they were in the area. Sherman has performed in various configurations on shows with B.B. King, Johnny Winter, Koko Taylor, Little Milton, Bobby Rush, and others.
John Paul Keith & The One Four Fives
Hot off the presses, John Paul Keith & The One Four Fives have just finished their debut LP, SPILLS AND THRILLS, for spring 2009 release on Big Legal Mess Records - an imprint of the legendary Fat Possum label of Oxford, Miss. John Paul Keith is a native of Knoxville, TN, who moved to Memphis a couple years ago and hooked up with Alvin Youngblood Hart's former rhythm section, bassist Mark E. Stuart and drummer John Argroves. Not content to embarrass just themselves, they soon recruited guitarist/producer/recording engineer Kevin Cubbins, along with pedal steel player John Whittemore (Jack Oblivian & The Tennessee Tearjerkers), and organist/piano man Al Gamble.Eschewing the normal route of opening for more established bands, the One Four Fives generated a buzz around Memphis by doing bills on their own. With multiple sets of Keith's originals mixed in with dusty cover tunes, these all-night rambles have earned the band quite a reputation in the dives around Midtown. Despite that, their audience just keeps growing.
Those Darlins
Those Darlins are a garage country band from Murfreesboro, TN. The ladies went live in 2006 and attracted immediate attention for their rowdy, cheerfully sarcastic, and sometimes boozed-fueled show, and for their unique interplay of distinct personalities. While considered to be the next big thing associated to Nashville’s rock scene since The Kings of Leon or Jack White, Those Darlins’ curious mix of classic country and ragged garage rock makes them one of a kind, eliciting comparisons like, “The Carter Family meets The Black Lips.” In 2009, the girls toured feverishly, playing 140 shows and sharing the stage with the likes of Dan Auerbach (of The Black Keys), Deer Tick, King Khan & BBQ Show, Wanda Jackson, The Avett Brother, Jon Spencer, and Dr. Dog. They made huge waves at SXSW, Bonnaroo, and Garage Fest. 2010 has already been full, with a Eastern headlining tour selling out many cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, St. Louis, Louisville, Brimingham, Nashville, and more. They have received widespread critical acclaim for their self-titled debut album, recorded in NYC and produced by Jeff Curtin, whose credits include Vampire Weekend’s debut. Self-released, they have already sold over 7,000 copies. For more information check out thosedarlins.com
