Community Programs
From Lifeshards to Cornerstones (2005 - 2010)
Lifeshards was a community mosaic program inspired by the "shards", or broken pieces, left behind by Hurricane Katrina. This hands-on Saturday art workshop was created after Hurricane Katrina for displaced coastal citizens and anyone local wanting to participate to create a mosaic tile, or cornerstone, to take home, as well as add their touch to a permanent piece that was installed on permanent display in the new Museum facility.
Lifeshards has been a viable, long-running community based program at the Mississippi Museum of Art. The partnership of Parents for Public Schools of Jackson and the MMA offered this program at no charge to families and individuals of all ages.
The workshops, which included tours of the current and permanent exhibitions at the Museum and hands on activities based on the exhibitions, were held the first Saturday of the month.
