HERB & DOROTHY film viewing
Mississippi Museum of Art, Trustmark Grand Hall
5:30 PM doors open, 6 PM movie begins
Free and open to the public, cash bar
HERB & DOROTHY tells the extraordinary story of Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, who managed to build one of the most important contemporary art collections in history with very modest means. In the early 1960s, when very little attention was paid to Minimalist and Conceptual Art, Herb and Dorothy Vogel quietly began purchasing the works of unknown artists. Devoting all of Herb's salary to purchase art they liked, and living on Dorothy's paycheck alone, they continued collecting artworks guided by two rules: the piece had to be affordable, and it had to be small enough to fit in their one-bedroom Manhattan apartment. Within these limitations, they proved themselves curatorial visionaries; most of those they supported and befriended went on to become world-renowned artists including Sol LeWitt, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Richard Tuttle, Chuck Close, Robert Mangold, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Lynda Benglis, Pat Steir, Robert Barry, Lucio Pozzi, and Lawrence Weiner. HERB & DOROTHY is directed by first time filmmaker Megumi Sasaki. The film has received the Golden Starfish Award for the Best Documentary Film and Audience Award from the 2008 Hamptons International Film Festival. It has also received Audience Awards from the 2008 SILVERDOCS Film Festival and the 2009 Philadelphia Cinefest. Palm Springs International Film Festival named HERB & DOROTHY one of their "Best of Fest" films in 2009. Sponsored by Ross & Yerger Insurance, Inc.

History Is Lunch
William F. Winter Building
Noon- 1 PM
Beth Batton, curator, Mississippi Museum of Art, talks about an exhibit of photographs by Oraien Catledge; his book of photographs published by University Press of Mississippi will be available for purchase. Oraien Catledge, a Sumner, Mississippi, native, captured in his black and white photographs the inhabitants and surroundings of the neglected
industrial area near downtown Atlanta known as Cabbagetown. His direct, unflinching images, reminiscent of the Great Depression work of Walker Evans, are a compelling visual record of an era and way of life that have vanished with modernization. By the time he stopped photographing in the rapidly gentrifying area, he had compiled a remarkable inventory of more than 50,000 negatives. This exhibition includes approximately eighty of those compelling images. A cloth-bound book featuring Catledge's photographs is published by the University of Mississippi Press and edited by Richard Ford and Constance Lewis, and will be available for purchase ($35). Parking is available across Amite Street behind Old Capitol Museum. For more information, please call 601-576-6998.

Dinners a la Art - A Sankofa Excursion
7:00 PM
50 GUESTS
$50 PER PERSON
The concept of SANKOFA is derived from the Akan people of West Africa. “Sankofa” teaches us that we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward. Visually and symbolically “Sankofa” is expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth. A sampling of Brazilian, Cuban, and African cuisines, along with jazz and other music, takes you to a heightened appreciation of the past, present, and the future.
Hosted by Isaac Byrd - 14 East Hill Drive Jackson, Mississippi
