This project was inspired by When Modern Was Contemporary
, our 2016 exhibition of modern art by more than 50 of the 20th century’s most influential artists, like Pollock and Rothko and Calder and O’Keeffe. These artists were legendary because of the risks they took; the new ways of thinking and making that they ushered into the world. In short, they dared to differ. We ventured across Mississippi to find the stories of Mississippi's own "modern" thinkers and doers who dare to differ. Explore the map and visit the sites. Join us in pushing the state forward – just like the artists did – into the future that awaits. Though the exhibition is over, this archive of Mississippi voices will remain preserved.
