Mississippi Museum of Art Auxiliary

The Mississippi Museum of Art Auxiliary (“Auxiliary”) was founded in May, 1984.  The organization’s purpose through the years has been to support and promote the growth and well-being of the Museum; to sponsor projects of various natures in support of the Museum; to raise money for the assistance of the Museum, including such promotional activity with the public as deemed desirable.

Since its incorporation, the Auxiliary has planned and executed a variety of social, fundraising, and educational programs and events – all to benefit the Museum.  One of its first, and perhaps largest, undertakings was the televised two-day auction known as “Thombai on the Tube.”  Produced as a live feed from the Museum, the auction offered a multitude of various items donated by Jackson’s best and most well-known artists, craftsmen, restaurateurs, and retailers, among others.

The Auxiliary has also sponsored annual fundraising galas to benefit the Museum.  The events have been numerous and successful, including the more recent and very popular New Year’s Eve extravaganzas.

The Auxiliary’s spring membership luncheon has always been a highlight of Jackson’s social season, and has typically offered a presentation or theme in honor of one of the Museum’s special exhibitions or programs.  Over the years, luncheon guests have enjoyed fashion shows, special guest speakers, as well as musical and literary offerings.

The Auxiliary plays a vitally important role in the history of the Museum, and the work of its members has helped transition this Museum into its present form.  Just as the Auxiliary is making its own transition away from an active role, the Mississippi Museum of Art continues to grow and change.  We encourage individuals of all ages to keep an eye out for ways to support the Museum.  We look forward to new vibrant Museum support organizations to carry the torch passed on by the Auxiliary.
