MMA Spotlight: Creative Healing Studio

Tuesday, January 7, 2020

With pencils, markers, paint, and every kind of art supply in-between, our studio classrooms will soon be busy in this new year. What will be the first project for Creative Healing Studio? Butterflies.

Creative Healing Studio (CHS) is a bi-monthly art therapy gathering for adults being treated for cancer or those with a cancer diagnosis in their past. Licensed art therapist Susan Ainlay Anand facilitates this group to express themselves through art in an open studio approach while also sharing stories of hope, fear, joy, and sorrow. Whether participants are novice or master, what comes out from each session is a beautiful gallery of love.

CHS has been generously sponsored by the UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute and the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center with a goal to help promote emotional well being. Beginning in 2020, CHS will go mobile, launching CHS Mobile to open studio sessions at the UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute and provide art therapy support for those to express themselves while awaiting treatment.

In our first session of the new year on January 8, CHS participants will be encouraged to create a butterfly as a symbol for new beginnings and in loving memory of a former participant.Through process and product, this project is designed to promote hope and healing. Beginning January 17th, these works will be featured in the Community of Art Gallery within the New Symphony of Time exhibition.

CHS meets at the Museum twice per month on Wednesdays from 12:30-2:00 PM. No experience is required. The event is free and open to the public; registration is required. To register, contact Susan Anand at smainlay@aol.com.
