It's YEAR SIX of the annual garden party that brings together the best of Mississippi’s growing food truck culture under downtown Jackson skies. New this year, the trucks will roll in early and be open for your third Thursday lunch break. Treat yourself to a diverse selection of fare from the state’s mobile culinarians, while enjoying the Latin-inspired music of The Jackson Gypsies on the C Spire Stage. This year’s festival goers will enjoy a pop-up exhibition showcasing work by Mississippi Arts Commission's 2019 Folk Art apprentices, outdoor Art Lab activities for all ages, and The Museum Store Sidewalk Sale before settling in on the BankPlus Green for a special edition of Screen on the Green featuring Disney's Moana. Got kids? We've got just the spot for them to hang out with books, games, bean bags, and more!
ABOUT THE MAC FOLK ART APPRENTICE SHOWCASE
The Folk and Traditional Arts Program at the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC) presents an exhibit featuring the work of seven traditional visual artists working in Mississippi. The artists highlighted in this program include Johnnie Smith (painter, Cleveland), Robert Pickenpaugh (potter, Madison), Bessie Johnson (basket maker, West Point), Greg Harkins (chair maker, Canton), Lyle Wynn (blacksmith, Ridgeland), Alan Kolodny (wire tatter, Jackson) and Coulter Fussell (quilter, Water Valley). Collectively, they represent the state’s rich and diverse artistic heritage. Individually, these artists demonstrate a mastery of traditional arts mediums. Join MAC as we celebrate these artists, who have previously participated in the Commission’s Folk Arts Fellowship grants program, the Folk Arts Apprenticeship grants program, or the Bicentennial Folk Arts programming. These programs help ensure the survival of community-based traditional art forms in the state by providing support to artists as they create new work or pass down their traditions to the next generation.
