Spanish Sojourns is the latest presentation in The Annie Laurie Swaim Hearin Memorial Exhibition Series, and the first exhibition to explore the Spanish paintings of Robert Henri, who played apivotal role in the history of American art as one of the key organizers of the progressive 1908 exhibition of the Eight. Henri first visited Spain in 1900 and returned six times between 1906and 1926, often for extended stays. There he produced some of his boldest and most compelling likenesses, drawing from a wide range of cultural figures including singers, dancers, musicians, bullfighters, gypsies, and peasants. Henri’s Spanish portraits also reflect his admiration for the great Spanish masters Diego Velázquez and Francisco Goya, whose works he studied closely. Spanish Sojourns includes forty paintings of Henri’s Spanish subjects. The exhibition is accompanied by a hard cover catalogue with full-color reproductions of works from the exhibition, a scholarly essay by noted Henri authority Dr. Valerie Ann Leeds, and an overview of the allure of Spain for American artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Dr. M. Elizabeth Boone, author of Vistas de España: American Views of Art and Life in Spain 1860–1914. Cost: $12 adults, $10 seniors, $6 students (includes admission to the 2014 Mississippi Invitational). FREE children 5 and under, FREE Museum members.
Spanish Sojourns: Robert Henri and the Spirit of Spain is presented as a partner exhibition to Robert Henri and Spain, Face to Face.
