Museum After Hours | Music in Motion

Every third Thursday, the Museum opens its doors after hours to partner with and embrace Mississippi’s creative community! Museum After Hours is a family-friendly mix of one-night pop-up exhibitions, live music, films, art-making activities, games, and more. This month’s pop-up exhibit showcases the lively work of artist and musician Don Jacobs. Enjoy the live, genre-bending tunes of Inasense, (DJ MissiHippian and vocalist Deja Samuel), catch Power APAC’s dance department mini-performances in the galleries, make a mask like artist Nick Cave at the Art Lab table, learn more about the Mississippi School of the Arts from some very special guests, and grab a seat for the final fall installment of our Art on Film series: Finster. After Hours bonus: At 5 PM, James Meredith will lead a conversation about exploring the Constitution and citizenship through art focused on Mildred Wolfe’s Four Freedoms, and at 7 PM, play the power board game, Curious Questions for Curious Citizens, with Michael Harris and artist daniel johnson. Using the medium of film, the Museum explores the stories of the artists and art on view in its new ongoing permanent collection exhibition, New Symphony of Time. This month, Art on Film presents Finster, a feature-length documentary film by Ava Leigh Stewart about the “grandfather of the Southern Folk Art movement” that colorfully shows how art can thrive outside of museums and galleries in ordinary places and in everyday objects. Get ready to stuff those stockings during this day of bubbly champagne, scrumptious samples, and delightful products by Mississippi artisans and entrepreneurs. Gift-wrapping is free with purchases, and Museum members receive 10% off everything in the store! Beginning at 4 PM, meet some of The Museum Store’s most creative vendors, including the ladies of Kay & Renee Collectibles, Camille and Rob Peeples of FEAST Specialty Foods, Jamie Faulkner of Let It Be Yours Jewelry, jewelry designer Joe Patterson, feather painter Elaine Maisel, and the folks from Mississippi Cold Drip Coffee & Tea. At 5:45 PM, the parish choir from St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral will fill the halls with the joyful sounds of Christmas classics for a special holiday edition of Music in the City. Bring the kids for cookie-decorating and crafts and leave with hearts overflowing with the holiday spirit. Visitors are invited to the opening day of our newest exhibition, Under the Winter Sky: Watercolors by Williams Hollingsworth, Jr. View the Mississippi Museum of Art’s collection that features fourteen of his characteristic watercolors, which share the theme of having been painted in the winter months of the last few years of the painter’s short life.
