We miss you! And we think of you often, hoping you are safe, healthy, and in as good spirits as possible right now. The longer our separation continues, the more I need to feel like there is something good to experience on the other side of this pandemic. In my religious tradition, periods of waiting (Advent and Lent) are intentional periods of self-reflection that prepare us for the miraculous. In more secular terms, beloved Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti said that he was, in 1958, “waiting for a rebirth of wonder.” That seems like the perfect description of this time for those of us who savor the experience of looking at art, up close, personal, and intimately. We at the museum are holding the tools that we hope will offer you the rebirth of wonder: paintings by Van Gogh of fields and flowers, Degas’ sculptures of a ballerina and horses, Monet’s glorious irises, and Manet’s sublime seascape.
They will be here for you to see in person, as soon as possible, and as often as you like. We are thrilled to share the news with you that Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, and Their Times has been extended until January 10, 2021. Our friends at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, especially our former director Alex Nyerges, are as committed as we are to your having as much time with this exhibition as you need to feel safe, relaxed, and ready to be at the Museum with these important purveyors of wonder.
Thank you for waiting with us, for your continued generosity as we endure our third month with very little revenue, and for your messages to us that art does matter in a time like this, that the Museum is one of the things you miss and look forward to visiting again when you’re all able. And we hope that will happen soon. In the meantime, we are cleaning, preparing, and getting everything ready to safeguard you, whose well-being is our priority, when you and these great artworks get to meet in person.
Please take good care, and do stay in touch.
All my best,
