Jonathan Kent Adams Digital Showcase

Johnathan Kent Adams: Queer Divinity

Queer Divinity is a digital exhibition exploring themes of spirituality, sexuality, and place by Mississippi artist Jonathan Kent Adams. On his journey to self-discovery, Adams created a body of drawings and paintings as a way to express his life experience in coming out as a gay man, and a connection with God. Later he began to explore large scale installations to tiny works on paper, presented in both traditional and unorthodox ways. This range in scale allows for viewers to better understand expanse of social constructions that exist. Focusing primarily on the figure to evoke personal experiences with identity and sexuality, Adams also explores symbolism through a softer look at still life and found objects he encounters. His work encourages self-discovery amid traditions that often deny the outsider’s existence.

Jonathan received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting in 2014 from the University of Mississippi. He studied under Mary Beth McKenzie at the Art Students League of New York in 2012. He currently resides and makes work in Water Valley, Mississippi.

Queer Divinity was curated by Christina McField, 2020 Andrew Mellon Curatorial Fellow at Mississippi Museum of Art.
