MMA receives $100,000 for fabrication of A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration
Jackson, MS…Today, the Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) announced it is a recipient of a grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The $100,000 grant will support the fabrication of commissioned works for the upcoming exhibition A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration.
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts awarded a total of $3.8 million to 50 organizations from around the country and Canada to support the vital work they do with artists and communities still reeling from the pandemic.
“We are honored to be recognized by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts for the Museum’s work with artists in our upcoming exhibition,” said Betsy Bradley, Director of the Mississippi Museum of Art. “Participating artists will create the interpretive framework – the lens through which to examine the reverberations of the past. As such, the Warhol Foundation’s generous support of these artists is paramount to the success of the exhibition.”
Co-organized with the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration will unveil commissioned works by 12 acclaimed African American artists examining the profound impact of the Great Migration on the social and cultural life of the United States. Co-curated by Ryan N. Dennis (she/her), MMA Chief Curator and Artistic Director of the Museum’s Center for Art and Public Exchange, and Jessica Bell Brown, BMA Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, the exhibition will open at MMA in April 2022 and at BMA in October 2022.
“The Spring 2021 grantees are taking this extended moment of disruption to business-as-usual to revisit and revise their approaches to supporting artists and communities,” states Joel Wachs, the Foundation’s President. “This is a time for deliberate movement towards more equitable structures inside and outside the art world. The Foundation is committed to supporting organizations that amplify the voices of artists and position them at the center of critical conversations shaping our future.”
