2023 Scholastic Art Award Gold Key-Winning Works on View through April 2, 2023
Jackson, MS…The Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) has announced the winners of the Mississippi Regional Competition of the 2023 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Presented by the nonprofit organization the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the country’s longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for creative students in grades 7–12. This year, which marks 100 years of the Awards, more than 100,000 teens from across the United States and Canada entered more than 300,000 works of art and writing. 185 creative teens from 65 counties in Mississippi received regional honors, including Gold Keys, Silver Keys, Honorable Mentions, and American Visions & Voices nominations, from the Museum.
Renna G Moore-Edwards, NBCT, Ida B. Wells APAC, NAHS Wells APAC Chapter Sponsor, MAEA President-Elect, stated, “Participating each year in the Scholastic competition not only has given our students an opportunity to display their artwork at the Mississippi Museum of Art, in New York City, and as part of the National Art.Write.Now.Tour, but they have also learned valuable lessons on how to create truly original art that shows their strong personal voice. By providing students this outlet to create high-level artwork that is unique and distinctive, in such a prestigious national competition, these creative Mississippi teens are given the validation and opportunities that can lead to a lifelong commitment to creative careers and endeavors.”
Sheri Shramek from Germantown High School said, “The Scholastic Art Awards are a great way for providing our students with, not only a way to express themselves but a way to communicate their thoughts and ideas. We’re proud of the work our students do and when their work is selected, whether it is a Gold Key, Silver Key, or Honorable Mention, we are extremely thrilled for them. When students and their families get to see their work hang in the Mississippi Museum of Art, it is so exciting and it’s just icing on the cake.”
An exhibition of the Mississippi region’s Gold Key-winning artworks is on view in the Museum’s corridor through April 2, 2023. Silver Key- and Honorable Mention-winning artworks are available for viewing on MMA’s website. Awarded artists and their teachers will be recognized during a ceremony Sunday, April 2, at 2 PM in MMA’s Trustmark Grand Hall.
