Using the medium of film, Art on Film explores stories of the artists and art on view of permanent and temporary exhibitions on view. In this two-part series, we premiere two films commissioned by Jamea Richmond-Edwards and Akea Brionne for A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration. Each viewing will begin with gallery remarks and conclude with a panel discussion about the film.
Join us as we celebrate the premiere of Akea Brionne’s film, Mississippi Goddamn, commissioned for A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration. In this 45-minute film, shot in Columbus, Mississippi, Brionne engages with her family’s history in the South through revisiting spaces with her grandfather, William T. Brown.
In this special event, participants will hear Brionne in A Movement in Every Direction, view her film Mississippi Goddamn, and hear Brionne and her grandfather, William T. Brown, in dialogue.

William T. Brown: William T. Brown is a native of Columbus, Mississippi. He received a B. S. degree in mathematics and physics from Dillard University in New Orleans. He also earned M. S. and Ph. D. degrees in physics, from the University of New Mexico and performed physics research in New Mexico for more than two decades and for two additional decades in Northern Virginia. He is now retired and lives in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Since retiring, he has completed his first work of fiction: “Eight O’May.”
