Art on Film | Daughters of the Dust

Using the medium of film, the Museum explores stories of the artists and art on view in Piercing the Inner Wall: The Art of Dusti Bonge, Betye Saar: Call and Response, and New Symphony of Time. This three-month series, held on every third Friday of the month from March-May, will feature screenings outside in The Art Garden and BankPlus Green. Curated and introduced by longtime Mississippi Film commissioner Ward Emling, each film will include a Q+A to discuss the film in cinematic, cultural, or historical context.

As she follows three generations of Gullah women, Julie Dash’s masterpiece Daughters of the Dust, assembles a world of heritage and connection, tradition and myth, place and time. In much the same way Betye Saar combines images and artifacts to create art, Daughters of the Dust connects the threads that link us all to the lands we inhabit and the legacies we own. With both artists, the juxtaposition of history and custom and ritual bring us all to a greater understanding of worlds, the visible and the ineffable.

Join for this special screening of Daughters of the Dust (1991), directed and produced by Julie Dash.
