Makers in Their Spaces | Alexis McGrigg

We are thrilled to introduce our newest Museum program, Makers in Their Spaces, with our first featured maker, Alexis McGrigg. Watch this video and then join us on Monday, May 18 at 6 PM (CST) for an Instagram Live conversation with McGrigg.

Makers in Their Spaces is an online program from the Mississippi Museum of Art in which the Museum is joined by the company of a maker to learn more about their practice and how they are drawing inspiration from their space (whether that be physical, emotional, social, or otherwise) during this time.

About the maker:
Alexis McGrigg is an emerging contemporary artist who explores themes of blackness, space, spirituality, identity, and collective consciousness. Her artwork utilizes the mediums of painting, drawing, transmedia, and installation to create fictional and philosophical narratives of black existence that stem from historical and lived experiences. She integrates poetry, sound, and performance in her practice as major contributors of influence throughout her research.

Alexis earned her Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting from Mississippi State University in 2012. In 2017, she received her Master of Fine Art from Texas Tech University with a concentration in Painting and a secondary emphasis in Transmedia. She has exhibited in several exhibitions across the U.S. in New York, New Orleans, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Oakland.

Thank you to Alexis McGrigg and MDub Creative for working with us on this video project. We will showcase a shorter video, edited by MDub Creative on Monday.
