MUSIC IN THE CITY | MILENA RUSANOVA + MICHAEL RUSHING

Music in the City returns with the delightful melodic stylings of violinist, Milena Rusanova and pianist, Michael Rushing. Join us via YouTube Live for this musical duo.

Meet the Performers:

Milena Rusanova, a native from Bulgaria, earned her BA in Violin Performance from the Bulgarian National Conservatory and MM from the Southeastern Louisiana University. While in Bulgaria she was a Finalist of the National Competition for violinists in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. In the USA Milena was a winner of the State level of the MTNA Young Artists Strings Competition, South-Central Division of the same Competition, and proceeded to the National Finals in Canada, Toronto. She was also one of the winners of the Monroe Young Concerto Competition and Southeastern Concerto Competition. She played as a soloist with the State Academy Symphony Orchestra-Sofia, Bulgaria, Monroe Symphony League, Southeastern Chamber Orchestra, and Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra. Milena has participated in different music festivals and concert series in the USA and Europe. She played with the Symphony Orchestras of Baton Rouge, Louisiana Sinfonietta, Acadiana, Mobile, Gulf Coast, Louisiana Philharmonic, and in Bulgaria: Chamber Orchestra “Orpheus” and New Symphony Orchestra. She currently plays with the MSO and teaches at JPS.

Micheal Rushing is an Associate Professor of Piano at Mississippi College, where he currently reached piano, pedagogy, and related courses. He also directs the Taylor School community music program. He has presented papers at the International Symposium for Assessment in Music Education, National Conference for Keyboard Pedagogy, Group Piano Pedagogy and Piano Pedagogy Forum, Music Teachers National Association national conference, regional College Music Society conferences, Mississippi Music Teachers Association state conferences, and the Mississippi Music Educators Association state conference. He has written for Clavier Companion and Piano Pedagogy Forum, and is a contributor to the early childhood music curriculum Music Play 2 (GIA Publications, 2020). He has served as treasurer and Vice President for Pre-College Performances for the Mississippi Music Teachers Association.  

Michael completed the Doctor of Music Arts (piano pedagogy) degree at the University of South Carolina, where he studied piano and piano pedagogy with Scott Price. He received his Master of Music and Bachelor of Music (piano performance) degrees from Mississippi College, where he was a student of Angela Willoughby and Patricia Walston.
