Best Made Trouble

Best Made Trouble

In honor of Pride Month, the Mississippi Museum of Art is pleased to highlight local LGBTQ+ artists alongside works from our permanent collection. The exhibition’s title is drawn from Gender Trouble, a foundational 1990 book by queer theorist Judith Butler, in which she states that “trouble is inevitable” and the task is “how best to make it, what best way to be in it.” Best Made Trouble celebrates the long tradition of queer art, which refers to a wide expanse of creative practices that challenge social and cultural conventions and affirm queer culture as artistic source material.

Participating local artists include Adrienne Domnick, Jonathan Kent Adams, Michael “Monte” Montgomery, and Michael Jones (“Penny Nickels”).
