VISUAL VOICES: Contemporary Chickasaw Art

With VISUAL VOICES: Contemporary Chickasaw Art the Museum continues our commitment to social engagement and racial equity. Visual Voices showcases the diversity of expression in contemporary Chickasaw art across different media and multiple indigenous perspectives. We are honored to connect our audiences with 15 artists from the Chickasaw Nation who represent the creative excellence of a tribe with deep roots in Mississippi. While many of the artists hail from Oklahoma, their work flows from the cultural and historical traditions of the Chickasaw people and the Mississippi homeland. In its bicentennial exhibition Picturing Mississippi: Land of Plenty, Pain, and Promise, the Museum featured three beautiful works of pottery by Chickasaw artist Joanna Underwood Blackburn. We are excited to host a larger exhibition that includes Blackburn among this group of leading contemporary Chickasaw artists.

VISUAL VOICES is made possible by a grant provided by the Chickasaw Nation, guidance from the Chickasaw Artist Board, and assistance from The American Indian Cultural Center and Museum. Additional support is provided by the Community Foundation for Mississippi—Tommy G. Ramey & Peggy Huff Harris Fund and Ross & Yerger.

This exhibition is free and open to the public.
