Jackson, MS…The Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) has announced the winners of the Mississippi Regional Competition of the 2022 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Presented by the nonprofit organization the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the 99th Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the country’s longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for creative students in grades 7–12. This year, nearly 100,000 teens from across the United States and Canada submitted their best art and writing. During this challenging year, over 1,200 works were submitted by nearly 600 creative teens from across the state of Mississippi. Of these works, jurors selected 187 Gold Keys, 205 Silver Keys, 243 Honorable Mentions, and five American Visions & Voices nominations.
The Mississippi Museum of Art has overseen the art component of the Mississippi Regional Competition for more than 60 years. “Each year, I am amazed by the work submitted by Mississippi teens,” said Merry Barnes, the Museum’s James and Madeleine McMullan Director of School Programs. “Students have been inspired by the many challenges of the last two years and are using art to self-reflect and tell their stories. I hope viewers find inspiration and respite in this year’s exhibition.”
MMA’s exhibition of Gold Key- and Silver Key-winning artworks is on view in the Museum’s Trustmark Grand Hall and corridor through March 20, 2022. Honorable Mention-winning artworks are available for viewing on MMA’ s website.
