The Final Years

The Final Years

A square color portrait of Jasper Staples, an older Black man with a hat and button down shirt, holding a young white girl. To the right of them is Lucille Fleming, an older Black woman with a cane. They both stand in front of a red car.

In this photograph taken by the artist in 1991, Jasper Staples appears on the left, holding the artist’s eldest child, Anna, while Lucille Fleming stands to the right.

1991

This image is an indication of the enduring relationship between Jasper, Lucille, and the artist’s family. Jasper is holding Anna, the artist’s eldest child. Lucille has arrived for a working visit. It was not uncommon for domestic employees to live in housing near their employers. Lucille’s entire career took place at the artist’s Sumner home, and while Lucille lived there for decades, she eventually acquired a home of her own in Tutwiler, Mississippi. Jasper began his career with the artist’s family in 1920, as a fieldhand for the May Brother’s Planting Company that was owned by the artist’s grandfather. He remained employed and an occupant in the rear dwelling of the artist’s Sumner home until he passed in 1992.
